View from Wikipedia Takes Manhattan experience

Hmm... it's difficult to evaluate this exactly, because it is very different from what we did in Wikipedia Takes Manhattan. In one way, this is more more ambitious, seeking to cover the whole world. In another way, it is more modest, because it is only organized online (ours was real-life), you're only appealing to Wikipedians (we reached out to local university students who were non-Wikipedians), and the prizes are barnstar-symbolic (we had physical prizes, which required sponsorship).

Because it's global, I would recommend that you focus less on making new lists of specific places. Instead, I think you could go in two ways (quite possibly simultaneously): (1) points for any article that is in a requested pictures list or category anywhere on the project (before a certain date) and (2) points for articles on general types of things that especially need "good" images (say, we wanted a great picture of an American mosque for Islam in the United States).

I think that more time needs to be invested into this project to make it a success, and that the current date might be unrealistically early. The organizers should really put out feelers at Wikipedia talk:Featured picture candidates and Commons:, and try to organize this into something like a WikiProject.
