The railroad of Chesapeake & Western Railroad Company is a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad, located in the northwestern part of Virginia. The owned mileage extends westwardly from Elkton to Bridgewater, Va., a distance of 27.367 miles. It also owns yard and side tracks totaling 2.626 miles. Its road thus embraces 29.993 miles of all tracks owned.


Corporate history.—The Chesapeake & Western Railroad Company was incorporated on January 22, 1892, by special act of Virginia, as the Chesapeake, Shendun and Western Railroad Company. Its name was changed to the present designation on May 14, 1895, as authorized by the act of incorporation. On May 1, 1902, the Chesapeake & Western Railroad Company was leased to the carrier for 99 years, and is controlled by the latter through ownership of practically all of the capital stock.
