Wikipedia:Meetup/Wellington/Expeditions Edit-a-thon 13 July 2024

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

What's it about?[edit]

Te Papa and its predecessors have participated in expeditions to find out about new environments, species and ways of life – journeys that are still making new discoveries today.

Ambrosia10 recently completed a project researching the research expeditions, so there's now a ton of data and sources ready to turn into Wikipedia articles.

We'll be working on articles about expeditions, but also the people, places, ships, species... whatever grabs our attention.

Come along and build your outreach and communication skills by sharing info about these journeys with the world. New editors are welcome and there'll be plenty of experienced Wikipedians to lend a hand with everything from signing up to tricky templates.

When and where[edit]

Saturday 13 July 2024 at Te Papa from 10am to 4pm.

Book in[edit]

Booking link coming soon!

What to bring[edit]

  • Laptop and power cord. Laptops are definitely easier to edit on than iPads. The venue has good wifi.
  • Any snacks or drinks you want. Lunch and some extra kai will be provided.
  • Any resources like publications about expeditions you've researched or been on.

Preparation[edit]

  1. If you're coming, try to create a Wikipedia account beforehand: don't wait until the day to do it! Here's a form you can use if you like. Creating an account makes editing much easier (here's more info on why you should). You'll need to pick a "handle" for your username; you could use your real name, but it's nice to have the option to be a bit anonymous if you want. Here's some advice on picking a username.
  2. The more you prepare, the more you'll be able to get done. You may want to read up on avoiding common mistakes, but Wikipedia has a "don't bite the newbies" policy, and we'll be there to troubleshoot.
  3. Have a think about topics you'd like to work on and check the resources section below so you're prepared. But remember, you don't have to be an expert to help. Anyone who can do research and write clearly can help improve Wikipedia.
  4. If you want to bring photos along and add them to Commons and Wikipedia, they need to be free of any copyright or released under a Creative Commons license that lets anyone use them. (What's Creative Commons?) If not, you must be the creator/copyright holder – ask us if you're not certain what's allowed, and we'll help.
