    how to check submission status[edit]

    Hi there,

I submitted a page a few weeks ago, just wondering how I can find a link to show the draft, or the status of the publishing of this page. Thank you. Loriann.simpson (talk) 01:40, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Loriann.simpson: If you did, it wasn't on this account, as this is your only edit made. Were you perhaps logged out when writing your draft? —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 01:44, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Loriann.simpson: If you may still have the same IP address then try logging out and clicking Special:MyContributions. Some Internet connections frequenlty change IP address. If you say what it was about then we can try to search for it. New users sometimes miss a step and never save their work so it may be lost. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:34, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Create an article[edit]

    how do i create a wikipedia article Andrewcliftonpayne (talk) 11:49, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Andrewcliftonpayne Welcome to the help desk. I should warn you that creating an acceptable article is very difficult, but you first need to read Help:Your first article. Shantavira|feed me 12:52, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Andrewcliftonpayne. To add to what Shantaviraj has said: in my experience, editors who try to create an article before they have spent (at least) several weeks learning how Wikipedia works by making improvements to existing articles, generally have a frustrating and miserable experience.
Once you have understood core principles like verifiability, neutral point of view, reliable sources, and notability, then is the time when you can read YFA and try it: or not. Creating articles is not the only, or necessarily the best, way to help improve Wikipedia. ColinFine (talk) 15:28, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Is it prefect to Draft to Public or Not. I think enough sources for a movie. Rinuverse (talk) 14:25, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Rinuverse The Times of India is generally regarded as an unreliable source for entertainment-related articles. @Hardikgogoi I don't think this was quite ready for Mainspace, so how come you re-created it out of the Draft into Main? Qcne (talk) 14:37, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
which is reliable source for entertainment? Rinuverse (talk) 14:39, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There are many; it's easier to specify which are not on a case-by-case basis: see WP:Verifiability and Wikipedia:Deprecated sources. A specific publication may be reliable for some matters and unreliable for others, and often the matter hinges on precisely what fact one is trying to verify. There is no simple answer. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.1095} 94.2.67.173 (talk) 00:19, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Rinuverse: In addition to what's been posted above, you uploaded as c:File:Hoy Maharaja.jpg to Wikimedia Commons as your "own work". What is your basis for making such a claim? Are you somehow associated with the Cinépolis, the company that distributed the film? Only the orginal copyright holder of the poster can claim it to be their "own work" as explained in c:COM:Own work. If you're not the original copyright holder, you can't upload the file to Commons without copyright holder consent. If you weren't aware of any of this and just made a mistake, then that's OK; the file, however, can't be kept by Commons. If you just made a mistake, you should go to the file's page on Commons, click on "Edit" at the top of the page, add the syntax {{SD|G7}] to the top of the editing window, click on "Show preview" and then click on "Publish changes" if everything looks OK. This will tag the file for speedy deletion per c:COM:CSD#G7. If you don't do this or wait too long to do this, the file will most likely be tagged as a copyright violation by someone else and deleted from Commons. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:27, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Jimmy Wales[edit]

Jimmy Wales was born on August 7, 1966 or on August 8, 1966? The source reported in the page about him https://www.oregonlive.com/siliconforest/2007/07/on_wikipedia_and_its_founders.html says that ""I am 40," Wales replied, adding that the date cited for his birthday on his Wikipedia biography -- Aug. 7, 1966 -- is incorrect". The date of his birth is uncertain. Can you provide some sources on this matter? 2A02:B025:F03:FFA1:1668:F38B:5C4F:DF93 (talk) 18:59, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Try Talk:Jimmy Wales then. Or register an account, make ten edits in four days, and then you can ask directly. Cullen328 (talk) 19:37, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Be aware also that it is entirely possible for Mr Wales to have been born on 8 August UTC (aka Greenwich Mean Time), which this global encyclopedia often uses by default, but 7 August local (Huntsville, Alabama) time, which lags UTC by 6 hours.
The Wikipedia article about him specifically mentions the 7/8th discrepancy in its Section 1: if there were any definitive Reliable source to settle the matter, it would have been used by now. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 94.2.67.173 (talk) 00:32, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to suggest that the information about the Manor House in Kirkheaton should also refer to the following internet search result. Kirkheaton Manor House (The Gatehouse Record) (gatehouse-gazetteer.info)-see below. This would suggest that the Manor house is NOT a Pele Tower but a Bastle. https://gatehouse-gazetteer.info/English%20sites/2450.html Would it be possible for someone more capable than myself to amend the information please ? Editing Deleted[edit]

Hello, I was editing The Try Guys page as they recently announced a new cast. I was editing the "Cast" section to include the new cast members with brief bios of each. All of my work was deleted as "not constructive" even though I was pulling the information for the bios from The Try Guys website and other legitimate sources. I was also providing links and citations as I went. I am not sure how this could have been viewed as "not constructive" Citsymtserof (talk) 20:52, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Citsymtserof. Disagreements between editors are a normal part of collaboration in Wikipedia: if you want to pursue this, your recommended course of action is to open a discussion with the editor who reverted you on the article's talk page Talk:The Try Guys. (Make sure you ping the editor, so that they know you've raised the issue). See WP:BRD for how this works.
My guess is that the other editor thought that you were putting too much detail in - we don't normally put extended bios of people in an article about something they were involved in. I may be wrong though. ColinFine (talk) 21:17, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

LaTex not rendering when using MS-Edge. Local or global?[edit]

I've noticed this happens in MSEdge on and off, and there does not appear to be a pattern or obvious (to me anyway) reason. For example, on the page

    https://en.luquay.com/wiki/Relativistic_particle

    equation (1) appears as

    $ E^{2}=(p{\textrm {c}})^{2}+\left(m_{0}{\textrm {c}}^{2}\right)^{2}\, $

I tried different "tricks" in the editor, but nothing appears to work. Chrome and Firefox do not have this problem (this is probably also true for other html readers, but have not checked.

Another suggestion I have seen is to explicitly log out (that is a link which, for me, appears at the top, right of any page). Then log in again. If that doesn't help and there is no better advice here, ask again at WP:VPT. Johnuniq (talk) 10:05, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Referring to a young person who's the subject of an article ...[edit]

I'm editing an article on the young soon-to-be-canonized saint Carlo Acutis. He was only a teenager when he died. Throughout the article, he is referred to as Acutis. Somehow it seems to me that because of his youth, it would be more natural to refer to him as Carlo instead and I'd like to make that change article-wide.

What guidance is there on this sort of thing in Wikipedia? Augnablik (talk) 10:59, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Dear Wikipedia,

I am trying to upload another logo to the Armada Music Wikipedia page because it still has the old logo right now. They have changed their logo for a couple of years now, so I want to fix that. Now that I am trying to upload the logo Wikipedia says it's copyrighted. How am I able to upload the new logo to Wikipedia if I don't have the copyright, because now the information on the page is wrong? Madstew (talk) 13:49, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Logos are one of the cases when non-free images are frequently used in articles. Please see WP:LOGO for how to do it.
Far more significant than the logo is the poor quality of the sourcing: I'm not sure that even one of the sources meets the triple requirement of being reliable, independent, and containing significant coverage of the subject. Without several such sources, the label will not meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability. ColinFine (talk) 14:53, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Madstew If a logo is simple enough, it could be below the threshold of originality, which means it is in the public domain and cannot be copyrighted. You would then need to choose the corresponding license option when uploading the image here or at Wikimedia Commons. Toadspike [Talk] 12:10, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Noel Ashman bio removed[edit]

Hi - I am trying to get Noel Ashman's page "unsalted" - apparently it was removed/taken down, after some contributors had added false information to it. Would you please direct me to what I need to do to return his previous page that can be added back to wikipedia. Ashmanassistant (talk) 13:51, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The biography wasn't deleted because of 'false information'. It has however been deleted, repeatedly, because evidence that Ashman meets our notability guideline has not been provided: see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Noel Ashman, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Noel Ashman (2nd nomination) and Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Noel_Ashman_(3rd_nomination). Unsalting will require evidence that the guideline can if fact be met, through significant in-depth coverage in published reliable sources. I suggest you start by finding them, and linking them here. And please note that if you are indeed Ashman's assistant, you will be required to conform to the Wikipedia:Conflict of interest guidelines. AndyTheGrump (talk) 14:03, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Nakba[edit]

    good afternoon.

With relation to the'Nakba' how can someone call it Ethnic Cleansing when the Arab league attacked Israel? This is misinformation and should be changed for legal reasons to prevent more racial hatred. We need to state facts correctly. 1 million jews ethnically cleansed from Morocco to Iran is a correct statement, The Christian population of Lebanon being massacred is ethnic cleansing, 1 million Greeks displaced from Turkey in 1923 is ethnic cleansing. Andy bandy24 (talk) 14:21, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The Nakba article is about an attack on Palestinians (presumably Muslims), not an attack on Israel. Multiple reliable sources refer to the displacement of Palestinians as ethnic cleansing, and this is discussed in the article. If you want to discuss improvements to the the Nakba article, it's best to do it on the talk page Talk:Nakba. ~Anachronist (talk) 15:48, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Colonel Boglin[edit]

My father Colonel William N Boglin was one of a few Africa American Colonels of his time, he was the hospital administrator and director of medical education at Wilford Hall along with General Chong, he was also under the same Generals command at Malcom Grow. Which my father servers as hospital administrator. Why is there information on General Chong but nothing on my father who paved the way for many officers in the Air Force! 2603:8081:6107:5D84:A9B5:679B:B7B:3F81 (talk) 20:48, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. The answer to the question "Why isn't there a Wikipedia article on X?" is generally one or both of "Because nobody has written it yet" and "Because X does not currently meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability".
"Notable" in Wikipedia's sense, does not mean important, or famous, or popular, or innovatory, or influential, or anything like that, though it sometimes goes with these: it means, roughly, "there is enough information about the X published in reliable, independent sources, to base an article on".
So the question comes down to, did your father get written about (and not just rountine mentions about his career and appointments) in books, newspapers, magazines, unconnected with him and his associates? If the answer is yes, then it is possible there could be an article about him; otherwise, there cannot be an article, no matter how ground-breaking he was.
Getting an article written on a particular subject can be a challenge, unless you manage to inspire somebody to create it. You can requst an article at Requested articles, but in all honesty, few requests there actually get taken up. You might find somebody interested if you post at WT:WikiProject Military history, but there are no guarantees. (If you do some research yourself, and find some of the sources of the kind I mentioned above, that may make the project more attractive to somebody.)
Finally, you are allowed to try and create an article yourself. This is not recommended because of your conflict of interest, and it may make a challenging task even harder. I always advise new editors not to even try creating an article until they have several hundred edits and several weeks of editing under their belt, and have learnt about key policies such as verifiability, reliable sources, neutral point of view, and notability. Then they can read your first article, and give it a go. ColinFine (talk) 21:09, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm getting no significant hits for Colonel William Boglin, and the only William Boglin I'm seeing is an arsonist, so the notability just isn't there. Clarityfiend (talk) 08:58, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

please remind me how to remove a redirect[edit]

I believe I have done this before but am blanking on the procedure. Do I just blank the page or do I need to add a template, or?

Specifically, I added an interlanguage link from Michael Servetus#Imprisonment and execution to fr:Guillaume de Trie, who denounced him to the Inquisition as a heretic. The redirect of Guillaume de Trie to Roman Catholic Diocese of Bayeux and Lisieux is counterproductive and impairs readability. Also, while he was in fact Bishop of Bayeux at one point, this is not the most notable thing about him. He was subsequently Archbishop of Reims and tutor to Philippe VI of France, the first Valois. That is why I would change this.

Could someone please advise when they have a minute? I could of course hard code the link with the colon syntax, but this doesn't flag the term as a needed article and is not the preferred solution here. Thanks. Elinruby (talk) 23:40, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Page previews not showing up[edit]

    Hello,

There's a line beneath the "Enable page previews" that says "If you experience problems please review your gadgets (which I already did) and user scripts, including global ones" ; here I am having some difficulties about understanding what does it mean, and if that's (the "user scripts") has got the problem or not.

But in the end it comes down to whether the article meets the general notability guideline, and you would not have full control over the article once it was created, as other people could edit it within Wikipedia guidelines.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 16:38, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I do, ive been following Dr. Karida Brown for sometime now and she is well overdue for a page so many others like myself can educate themselves about her work. BIGDAWGRJ (talk) 16:45, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It sounds like you've done pretty well doing that without a Wikipedia article abour her. 331dot (talk) 20:02, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@331dot I am trying to create a page for Dr. Karida Brown but the page is not accepted. I added citations from credible sources but no approval.
Thank you for the heads up! BIGDAWGRJ (talk) 16:43, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The obvious question here is WP:BOSS. Have you been asked to do this?--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 17:39, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ianmacm I have not been asked to this but this is a project I am working on to make her researchable BIGDAWGRJ (talk) 22:13, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
BIGDAWGRJ Please see your user talk page. Your self made claim of desperation suggests you are more than a mere interested person. 331dot (talk) 20:01, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@331dot you are correct. I am the project manager for her husband Charly Palmer and as a gift to her he wants to create a wikipedia page for her before her new book releases October 2024. BIGDAWGRJ (talk) 22:15, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
BIGDAWGRJ You should have said this from the beginning. You must formally declare this, see your user talk page for instructions. Wikipedia is not concerned with outside events and will not accommodate your schedule. Wikipedia articles are not gifts or ways of honoring someone. 331dot (talk) 22:33, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I quote the first version of this draft:
Karida L. Brown (born August 9th, 1982) is an American sociologist, author, professor, and public intellectual who serves as Professor of Sociology at Emory University. She served as the inaugural Director of Racial Equity & Action at the Los Angeles Lakers from 2020 to 2022. She is recognized for her scholarship on Black history and culture. Her research also examines the history and function of racial colonial capitalism. She has published widely on a broad array of topics, migration, education, collective memory, and social theory.
    It looks familiar, somehow.

That's from Wipekah's (subsequently deleted) user page.
BIGDAWGRJ, are you Wipekah? Or what's going on here? -- Hoary (talk) 21:51, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Hoary Im not Wipekah or do I know what that is. Im just a guy who is trying to create a Wikipedia Page for my employer wife for a surprise towards her new book. Im just looking help to get her page approved.
When I first attempted to create a document for Karida Brown I accidentally replaced someone else's Wiki Page hence the deleted page. This is my first time creating a page on Wikipedia and just looking for assistance BIGDAWGRJ (talk) 22:19, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, BIGDAWGRJ, this edit of yours was most unfortunate. But it seems to have been an honest mistake. If you're unacquainted with Wipekah, then how come your draft and Wipekah's are so uncannily similar? -- Hoary (talk) 23:29, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I would also point out that a Wikipedia article about someone isn't necessarily a good thing and might not in the long run be appreciated. Shantavira|feed me 08:36, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Excessive use of the quote parameter in Cite web on Women's Elite Rugby[edit]

A new article was created at Women's Elite Rugby with all of the references/citations using the quote parameter in the citations, along side this the Harvard citation no brackets was also used. I went through the article removing the quote parameters (as almost all articles don't use them and in my opinion they were excessive) In doing this I also removed the Harvard citation no brackets and replaced them with {{Cite web}} for consistency. My original reasoning was "Remove quote parameter from citations to reduce redundancy and keep the references concise" and "improve sourcing/citations" the article creator questioned me and i mentioned my reasoning but would just like to make sure I have done nothing wrong. I also would like clarification on the use of the quote parameter. SimplyLouis27 (talk) 23:30, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There is such a thing as WP:CITEVAR, which see. That being said, I think that quotations should be only be used when the wikitext is controversial and the source is protected by a paywall. In general, heavy reliance on quotations suggests that editors have not given enough thought to summarizing their sources. When quotations are necessary to the understanding of the article topic, those (few) quotations should be made part of the article body and properly cited. Quotations require citations; citations do not require quotations.

Noted, thank you. I have let the other editor know about this response. SimplyLouis27 (talk) 00:05, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
