Vrhovnik

I see you've started deleting my article Vrhovnik. Well you might not know quite as well on this position, but I know for sure that Tudjman imitating Tito's uniform and made myself wearing epaulets rulers as it was not a military rank title. I am convinced that the ranking derived from his desire to resemble a Tito but also it can not be denied that even today as an act exists in the Croatia because it stupidly deleted. Snake bgd 16:44, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

That doesnt explain anything that rank exsisted and its part of encyclopedia article as part of history. Snake bgd 17:07, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

Proposed DYK

Hi! What do you think about expanding Croatian European Union membership referendum, 2012 fivefold to meet DYK criteria and requesting 22 January for its appearance date? Currently, its prose size is about 650 characters, making the task relatively simple.--Tomobe03 (talk) 12:26, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

Hook should be interesting, so maybe one could point out that it is the first referendum since independence or the first referendum in more than 20 years... I'll give it some more thought though. Any ideas?--Tomobe03 (talk) 18:10, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
Sorry to hear that, get well soon. I've already started expanding some sections of the article in my sandbox, and I'll unroll those out today. On the other hand, I'll have on and off access to internet next week, so could you then keep an eye out on that DYK nom next week (if a review starts that is)? Come to think of it, could you please keep an eye out for the Template:Did you know nominations/Television in Croatia - I don't expect any problems there, but just to be on the safe side?--Tomobe03 (talk) 15:29, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, I wouldn't like to drag out any review questions unnecessarily. Btw, the Template:Did you know nominations/Croatian European Union membership referendum, 2012 is now up!--Tomobe03 (talk) 23:49, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
Once again, thanks a lot. Btw, I was quite happy to see that the vlada.hr government website has released all the website contents for free use under a CC-BY licence, so the flags image came from there.--Tomobe03 (talk) 11:53, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
Interestingly enough, WP:ITN does wonders for article traffic... The article passed nom to the ITN and apparently became the most viewed WP:CRO article yesterday, even though Croatia article received six or seven thousand extra hits since the DYK and ITN appearance, receiving 14k+ hits yesterday. Perhaps it would be wise to plan ahead for possible future ITN candidates?--Tomobe03 (talk) 15:51, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
You got a point there and the PDF is great reading. I also feel that many "high visibility" or project-top-importance articles are far below par, while undoubtedly significant amount of effort is expended editing... something. I think not much effort would be necessary to improve the top-importance and the most-viewed articles to at least GA-class - and this was primarily the reason to invest my time into editing top- or high-importance stubs and start-class articles in the WP:CRO hoping to reach the GA. Of course, this could be achieved incrementally, much like a conveyor belt discussed some time ago when discussing the project quality scale. Obvious targets for this improvement are the top/high importance articles, and the WP:CRO/PP top-ranked articles, such as Severina Vučković you already mentioned.
Practical problems in this include need for copyediting (non-native speakers of English among us at least) - and WP:GOCE slowed down considerably once it opened up a FAC copyedit department. For instance, I posted three requests there (maximum allowed) in early and mid December with zero responses so far. Perhaps it would be good to find out if there's a native speaker of English participating in the WP:CRO who's willing to copyedit those WP:CRO articles bound for GA or FA? Furthermore there's sheer volume of research required to tackle 100 or so articles falling into the above categories, but I think the best approach is - one by one. Naturally there'll be similar topics that will allow more efficient sequences of editing: once you cover the parliament and the government, the politics in Croatia article is easy to do... :)
The referendum article is definitely going to GAR, but as I already said, the GOCE is now a bottleneck. I already posted the maximum of three requests there and there are four others going there besides the referendum article... Patience is in order I guess.--Tomobe03 (talk) 17:41, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi! I gave the Adriatic Sea a bit of a workover and I'm left with a question. I have absolutely no idea what to place in the "See also" section, and I would be most comfortable with removing it altogether. On the other hand, where should the portal box go then? Any suggestions?--Tomobe03 (talk) 19:45, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Right. I guess a good copyeditor is the next stop for the article then... GOCE is very slow right now, so that may take some time to set up.--Tomobe03 (talk) 11:01, 3 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi! I recently added to the Counties of Croatia and requested a GOCE copyedit of the article - and I intend to nominate it as a FL. I got an alternative map design in my sandbox - no text this time. I tried to make a map based on code used for states of Germany here but there's simply too many counties packed tightly even in image 450px across, and long county names do not help either. Pandurs

Hi! I just completed referencing of Pandurs and asked WP:MILHIST to review their project's assessment of the article. I'd like to ask you to help with categories of the article: For instance, I'm at loss whether the article belongs to "History of Vojvodina" category just because some pandurs were from eastern Syrmia or not. On the other hand, I'm pretty sure the "History of Romania" and "Oltenia" categories are not warranted, while "Military history of Austria" could probably be justified. I made no changes to categorization since I'm not quite sure in that area though. Thanks!--Tomobe03 (talk) 20:26, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

Tanais tablets

You cannot be serious in claiming the tablets found in Tanais have anything to do with modern Croats. The personal names of Sarmatian population that supposedly lived there cannot be in any possible way connected with Croatian history. Such comparisons are anachronistic, you can find them in the historiography of 16th or 17th century, based on pure speculation and similarities. As such they imply the existence of (modern) "Croats" in time when nothing similar could have existed. You have to take into account the fact, that no writer of early or late antiquity mentions "Croats" in that environment.

Thus this all is but a construct of chauvinistic and nationalistic history projecting the concept of modern nation in some distant past. As such it is wrong and misleading and has nothing to do with truth. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.182.111.134 (talk) 10:50, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

Hello,
First of all, please note that I'm not "claiming" anything, since I neither wrote the article nor did make any significant contributions to it. I can't even say that I'm particularly interested in it as an editor. However, I do object to edits like these, and other editors seem to agree.
My opinion on the subject does not matter, because it all boils down (or at least should boil down) to what the reliable sources say. Nevertheless: I think that the connection with Croats is very weak and cannot be described as more than speculative, but it is not impossible. I believe DNA testing will provide an answer one way or the other in the next couple of decades. GregorB (talk) 13:03, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
Greets,
It is "impossible". Analog to such claims would be the idea that the ancestors of Persians is the ancient hero Perseus. It is absurd and anachronistic, leading to utterly wrong conclusions. DNA testing will not prove anything that Im completely sure of cause it cannot prove anything except the simple fact, that the population of today's Croatia is a mixed one with plethora of influences.

Croats have 3 theories of origin and no certain year or decade of arrival (sources are unclear). Iranian, Gothic and Slavic one. Two of them came into existence under specific political orientation and pressure: Slavic with the creation of Ilyrism and subsequently Yugoslavia and Gothic with the creation of fascistic NDH. Just like the Gothic one, the Iranian theory must be understood as a diversion from the Slavic theory. In any case, Slavic theory can be the only possible one, due to the fact that Croats speak a Slavic language. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.143.107.95 (talk) 12:58, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

I'm out of my depth here... The Iranian theory is unusually popular in nationalist circles not because it's convincing, but because it strikes a chord ("We Fooians are not like everyone else, we are unique" - a perennial trope). Taken to extreme ("Croats are not Slavs"), it is totally absurd. In the end, it just might turn out that the Iranian and Slavic theory are compatible in at least some aspects.
If you're interested in this subject as well as improving this article and also Theories on the origin of Croats (which is fact the main article on this subject), I can start a request for comment. Would you be interested in participating in such a discussion? GregorB (talk) 13:24, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

GregorB, you are invited!

Hi! Thanks for the tip - I actually never heard of it. Now I checked the linked page out and enabled the gadget - I guess I'll give it a go for a while to see if I like it. Well I gave it a go with Geography of Croatia - and I'm not ready to give up on it yet, but it's more confusing than not. Somehow I managed to lose a lot of spaces next to wikilinked items and a convert template, not to mention problematic copy-pasting author names or article titles which preserved character formatting... I'll give it another shot shortly, but I guess it takes time.--Tomobe03 (talk) 16:27, 31 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi! Congrats on the newest DYK. What is the B.A. in law meant to stand for?--Tomobe03 (talk) 19:13, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

Oh, yes, that's complicated. Technically, bachelor of laws is abbreviated LL.B. but some British universities have programmes combining law studies with other disciplines, such as sociology etc. and then the degree attained is B.A. in Law considered equal to LL.B.--Tomobe03 (talk) 20:56, 7 June 2012 (UTC)
Sorry to jump in - Oxford and Cambridge offer a BA in jurisprudence, commonly referred to as a law degree (it being offered by the "Faculty of Law"). It is on the same footing as an LL.B. Grandiose (me, talk, contribs) 19:48, 17 June 2012 (UTC)

Re: GAs

Thanks! Yes it appears that once one gets a hang of that, writing articles is not so difficult. Considering a GA review drive that just got underway I hope to get eight or so additional articles reviewed. Link rot starts to worry me though, since some relatively recently created articles needed updating, such as in case of Croatian independence referendum, 1991 which just became a GAN. Perhaps it would be wise to start archiving references once an article is developed.--Tomobe03 (talk) 16:20, 18 June 2012 (UTC)

I think I'll get around to creating WebCite archives of some GAs when GAN queue clears up. Link rot is the primary route to delisting, so I think that would be a worthwhile effort - that should not take that much effort as finding sources anew. The GA queue seems to be moving along appreciably, so I hope that archiving is about to happen soon.--Tomobe03 (talk) 17:58, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

Elections in Croatia image

Hi! Thanks for stepping in regarding the image of the interior of the Sabor. I'd like to keep the present image there, and I'm happy to wait a bit for further developments regarding that. On the other hand, I'd prefer not to drag out the GAR beyond tonight, so I'll switch the image for a new one (as indicated in the GAR talk), so should it happen to take more time to positively resolve the licensing issue for the present image, it can always be switched back once the license is confirmed. I believe that would be a reasonable course of action, what do you think?--Tomobe03 (talk) 11:33, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

Dragi Grgure

Pozdrav ! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.189.228.157 (talk) 09:49, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

A sourced sentence was deleted without offering an alternative ("I have a reference" does not count), which is unacceptable, and that's why I reverted. I don't care one way or the other as long as the information is sourced. This was perfectly legitimate, so being called an "Ustasha propaganda spreader" is also unacceptable. I also resent the implication that I was about to go into an edit war. What makes you think so? Please check WP:AGF. GregorB (talk) 11:34, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the barnstar! Archiving references may be tedious, but it really annoys me to see hours of work diminished in quality because someone decided to clean out hard drive of a website server. Moreover, uncertain fate of Vjesnik and Nacional websites (and their contents) made this archiving run a bit of a Fahrenheit 451 moment, but I believe it is worth it. WikiProject Serbia

Hi,

I noticed that WikiProject Croatia is quite active and that your role in that success is significant. Can you please help me with a couple of things on WikiProject Serbia.

Do you have any advice how to deal with:

  1. big number of unassessed articles
  2. lack of editors who are active in the project
  3. introduction of formall assessment procedures
  4. any other thing you think could help WikiProject Serbia

Best regards,--Antidiskriminator (talk) 12:56, 18 September 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for your answer which is highly appreciated. --Antidiskriminator (talk) 14:16, 18 September 2012 (UTC)
As I posted below I couldn't help noticing this and took some time to think about these issues (the first three at least) in terms of WP Croatia. The first one is of course not a real issue for WP:CRO in great part thanks to you and other editors who took time and effort to assess articles. I have nothing substantial to add to the second issue reply offered already, but in terms of the third one - maybe one: WP:CRO has about 100 B-class articles, but a substantial portion of those do not actually meet all six criteria (per Wikipedia:BCLASS) and that may actually be a problem for two reasons:
  • Quality of the specific articles is improperly tagged - which is of a secondary importance overall
  • B-class implies a relatively high degree of development of an article, which may discourage new editors from tackling those. This may be significant, since B-class articles tend to cover interesting topics which might draw new editors to participate in a given project - which is IMO much more important here
I was thinking of proposing a campaign (or a drive as such things tend to be called on wiki) to reassess quality of the B-class articles and demote those better deserving lower (presumably C-class) rating. This is not meant as a means of putting down involved editors, but as a route which would allow improvement of the same to full compliance with the B-class (or better - in my experience a B-class article is a WP:LEAD compliant lead and a WP:GOCE copyedit, in that order, away from GA-class). Of course, if a given article warrants reassessment from B to C-class, a to-do list should be made by the reviewer specifying what exactly need be done to meet specific B-class criteria and appropriate maintenance tags should be added. The same advice could be offered to WP:Serbia, of course. What do you think? Should this be discussed first at the Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Croatia?--Tomobe03 (talk) 11:58, 6 October 2012 (UTC)
I concur. I'd prefer starting focused on current B-class only as that's "just" 100 or so entries, but I agree that there's virtually no difference in approach regardless of the specific article reassessed being C or B-class. The incremental approach would allow a more easily achievable objective and perhaps draw more help for the four times the size drive (C-class). But either way, I'm fine with the scheme.--Tomobe03 (talk) 13:47, 6 October 2012 (UTC)
At any rate, I'd apply WP:BCLASS fairly rigidly because in areas other than comprehensiveness of the article those are fairly straightforward to fix (may require work, i.e. referencing, though) but those would really offer good pointers on how to improve those articles. Lax interpretation would be a nice pat on the back but of no help on the road to featured or good content. Of course, a specific, itemized and clear to-do list would be essential for any article reassessed or confirmed as C-class, otherwise all that work would be fairly pointless - it should be about identifying how to improve and grow.--Tomobe03 (talk) 13:53, 6 October 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for interesting and useful tool which can help with the unassessed WP Serbia articles. I really appreciate your help.--Antidiskriminator (talk) 17:44, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
Is there any general assessment guideline? I mean i.e. all lakes and rivers should go into mid importance, all villages should go into low importance, all towns into high, and all cities which are district seats to top importance, all mountains into mid,.... --Antidiskriminator (talk) 21:17, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
You were obviously right when you stated that besides backlog of unassessed articles there is backlog of untagged articles. Thank you for this useful list.--Antidiskriminator (talk) 12:58, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

While prose is understandably preferable for wikipedia, the bullet points, in the article, are essentially dividers for highlights that are thoroughly expressed in prose format. The bullets serve as a tidy transition of prose. Without the bullets, additional (and otherwise unnecessary) prose will need to be added to untangle a potentially ensuing mess (each prose-like bullet is independent of the other bullets). Ergo, I propose removing the tag before someone answers the call. — Eurodog (talk) 01:39, 23 September 2012 (UTC)

Geobox fix

I fixed the Geobox issue. Thanks, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:10, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

I am not that familiar with deletion procedures, tried to find a discussion page for it, couldn't. In any case my position is no opinion. I'm not familiar with the recent activities of the society as I'm no longer active in it. I realize that in order to establish notability there needs to be independent media coverage, and I can check for it in meatspace with people who are active. – Miranche T C 04:22, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

GregorB, the HID people have kindly forwarded me a number of links that may be enough to establish notability. I posted them on the article's talk page and removed the prod banner. Please let me know how they look, and if you're agreed they're sufficient I'll go ahead and condense the info into a paragraph or two about the Society. Thank you! – Miranche T C 23:00, 27 September 2012 (UTC)

No sweat. There's a single item in the article I still want to change, but I'm still rechecking sourcing for that one.--Tomobe03 (talk) 13:19, 1 October 2012 (UTC)
Done that one too - I suspected a factual mistake in the prose and apparently there was one: V was born in "Sveti Petar" and that toponym somehow transformed into Ličko Petrovo Selo, possibly because there was no Sveti Petar on the map of Lika to be found. However, that particular site is now known as a collection of villages around and including Bruvno. I think I have nothing further to add on the topic. As far as I'm concerned it's up to the reviewer now.--Tomobe03 (talk) 18:33, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

Re: B and C class

Well, Wikipedia:BCLASS has six criteria instead of WP:MILHIST's five - the difference being B6 criterion, in essence requiring that the B-class articles conform to Wikipedia:TECHNICAL. I suspect that particular criterion is not that much to ask for and should be required. Besides, I suspect that most of the current WP:CRO B-class (and C-class for that matter) articles are not that much concerned with complex technical, scientific or otherwise complicated matters, and that the B6 requirement will largely be met as it is. - So yes, I'd accept it for those few that remain.--Tomobe03 (talk) 17:29, 6 October 2012 (UTC)

On a further note - the holistic approach, IMO, might work fine for C-class/Start-class distinction, simply because of sheer number of the two classes and scale of work needed to turn a Start-class into a B-class article. On the other hand, a B-class article is basically a C-class one with certain elements covered and should be treated as such, especially because that allows establishing of a conveyor belt spanning C-class articles (checked against B-class criteria) to B-class and WP:GAN. In itself the conveyor belt should be sufficient for most editors willing to do some work, but not prepared to spend time thinking about what need be done to a particular article, to contribute efficiently towards tangible improvement of the project material - both in terms of picking up a C-class article and ticking off some (or all) of the items on the to-do list (either one provided in the talk or at the very least in terms of fulfillment of the B-class criteria) and in terms of picking up a B-class article, fixing linkrot, tying loose ends (lead, MOS issues, etc) and submitting a GAN.--Tomobe03 (talk) 17:41, 6 October 2012 (UTC)
Regarding B6 - it does not just guard from overly technical content. To me, "written with as broad an audience in mind as possible" means - in our particular case - that an average Wikipedia user with no specific knowledge about Croatia and the Croats will be able to understand the context of the article and extract useful information (ideally, even insight) from it. For example, a well-written article on a historical topic will have a "Background" section where necessary, rather than just springing right off into details of the event. I don't think too many WP Croatia articles have that problem, but checking against it where appropriate can't hurt.
I'd support the 6-item checklist. I don't think there's anything in WP:Assessment I wouldn't agree with.
I feel that both Wikipedia and this project are becoming less and less about building from the ground up (even if there is still plenty of room for that, particularly for us), and more and more about incremental improvements across the board. GregorB (talk) 22:19, 7 October 2012 (UTC)
I agree completely. I'm trying to piece together something that could be offered for the project members to cooperate on that matter. It's currently in my Sandbox2 - though it still lacks clarification on few things such as the B6 criterion you just spelled out. If needed, that can be moved to a project subpage as a place to coordinate such a drive - to avoid duplication of work - if necessary.--Tomobe03 (talk) 23:33, 7 October 2012 (UTC)

Re: Useful tool

Thanks, that's a great tip. I took a look at the C/B ambiguous ones, none met B criteria IMO at the first glance, but I'll take a closer look later on. One (Francetić, I think) is quite close, likely missing a single reference (tagged now).--Tomobe03 (talk) 09:58, 11 October 2012 (UTC)

In vein of professed need for proactive assessments (i.e. stating what need be done and possibly fixing minor shortcomings) I found the missing citation for the Jure Francetić article and I trust it meets B-class requirements. Likewise, Zagreb Airport IMO surpasses Start class, but it is still considerably short of B. In consequence, the former is now a B, and the latter C. Please do correct me if I overlooked something, after all you are more experienced in the field of assessment.--Tomobe03 (talk) 14:01, 11 October 2012 (UTC)

Tried my hand at Zagreb - and found myself facing a conundrum. Look at this description of the museum (the first two sentences at least) and the same are used in the article indicating clear copyvio. The same situation applies to some other museum descriptions, but not to all of them. What to do? If it were the whole section, I'd tag it as copyvio section, but I don't know if that can be done piecemeal or not, or if the section as a whole should be tagged after all. The section may have been the work of Admiral Norton (not too sure though).--Tomobe03 (talk) 02:32, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
Looking at Osijek I found significant parts of prose copied verbatim between the article and this site. The latter seems reputable, but it is not dated, and the first instance of a bit of that particular material in the article dates back to April 2004 (diff). I suspect that wiki may have actually been the source of the copying process here (i.e. no wiki copyvio), just thought to run this by you for a second opinion.--Tomobe03 (talk) 13:38, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

Hello GregorB

I need advice about an editing. Maybe you've heard, I accidentally found it, that municipal authorities in Gvozd made decision to re-rename village and to return name Vrginmost. Here are several sources (I still have not found an official document) : http://dnevnik.hr/vijesti/hrvatska/vijecnici-srpske-nacionalnosti-promijenili-ime-gvozda-u-vrginmost.html , http://www.novossti.com/2012/10/pokrajine-131/ and http://www.jutarnji.hr/tomislav-karamarko--nije-dobro-sto-opcinska-vlast-u-gvozdu-inzistira-na-promjeni-imena-naselja-gvozd-u-vrginmost/1034727/ . Now I would like to rename article and change name in other articles (like-Template:Subdivisions of Sisak-Moslavina County, Sisak-Moslavina County, Municipalities of Croatia...). Problem is as you can see that this change is controversial for some people, and I would really like to avoid editing conflicts because at the moment I have neither time nor will to discuss widely and interfere with other editors. What is your opinion?--MirkoS18 (talk) 01:04, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Help needed

Hi,

Will you please help me with one issue at Template:Did you know nominations/Roman Theatre at Palmyra. English is not my native language and therefore I maybe misunderstood the original hook. My understanding of the original hook was that the only finished part of the theater was cavea. Is it possible that it actually means the opposite, that only unfinished part of the theater was cavea?

Btw, I followed your advice here and added hundreds of stubs to WikiProject Serbia.--Antidiskriminator (talk) 11:26, 11 November 2012 (UTC)

Thank you both for your comments and assistance. I've expanded the cavea article a bit on GregorB's suggestion, and created a better illustration of the different cavea levels. While the illustration that GregorB linked to is useful, I think the Colosseum presents a very particular case in the empire (especially with the vocabulary used), and is less relevant, because it's an amphitheater, rather than a theatre. Many thanks again! Yazan (talk) 13:36, 11 November 2012 (UTC)
