Hello dearheart, I apologize for not getting back to you sooner. I have been overwhelmed both here and in RL. I hope you know (without even needing to ask) that allowing the reassessment of the GA had nothing to do with my confidence in the quality of your original assessment. As I said before, you did the best review I've ever had. That has now closed with its GA intact.

There were several comments on western bias, and since those were valid, I have been working on that. The article is now 2000 words longer than it was. Sigh. I have opened a new peer review in view of all the changes that have been made. I will understand if you are sick of this - I know I am - but I am determined to see it through. No hard feelings if you want to beg off. You're one of the best editors I've run across, so I am glad to have become acquainted whatever you choose for this article. I will continue to think highly of you. Just wanted to let you know what's going on. Jenhawk777 (talk) 20:30, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have just finished a rewrite of the section "Crusades". I think this is the last of the rewrites. I hope. I have been working on this article for nearly two years now. It is beginning to look like my life's work. I really need it to be the best it can be. Jenhawk777 (talk) 17:31, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I apologize for not getting back sooner; I am amazed with how much better of a state the prose is in now! You have done wonderful work condensing things down and making it flow better. The most nitty-gritty fine-combed polishing will certainly happen at FAC itself, but I bet you would get a large number of interested reviewers with how things have been so far. Generalissima (talk) (it/she) 23:22, 28 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I was afraid maybe you were sick of me and this article. :-) You know this article better than any of the other commenters, so your compliment means a lot. Thank you.
It is down to 12,850 words! I keep going through it to delete extraneous detail wherever I can, but I'm getting to the end I think. Notes only contain additional evidence - according to WP policy - and no rabbit hole discussions. Eastern C. is in every section. I'm pretty proud of that! The Cambridge history gave the East its own book, but I didn't like it separated out like that as if it didn't belong with the rest. IMO it's as much a part of the History of C. as western is and should be included rather than separated, so I put it in every section. I hope that means no more western bias!
I keep going over sources. I have referenced the Cambridge history of C. from 39 separate chapters. I have several broad general Histories of C., and histories of specific eras, and specific characteristics, and the history of the humanities - because religion impacts culture and culture impacts religion - and the articles with the most up to date research. I think I have the best sources available. All of this required some reorganization, so it's a very different article than it was, but I honestly think it's a better one now too.
I can't seem to find a Middle Ages expert who is interested yet. Everyone who previously commented seems busy now. No one has commented in what feels like forever to me. :-) If you can think of someone, I could go ask them if they are interested in commenting. Everything's at a stand still right now. Thank you for your support. I genuinely appreciate it. Jenhawk777 (talk) 03:44, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Generalissima!!! It's down to 12,7!!! Jenhawk777 (talk) 05:33, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Congrats! I was just looking at your recent revisions to it when you pinged. You have made such a wonderful improvement on it; I think this might be getting to the point where FAC'ing it is the best way to get eyes and feedback on it; it will be nit-picky feedback, but good feedback. If there are problems in the medieval section, they would certainly be brought up there, but I can't imagine them being major due to how much thorough review has already taken place. Generalissima (talk) (it/she) 05:38, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I will follow your advice and do that then. Thank you! Jenhawk777 (talk) 17:08, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I saw you claimed this one for the Core Contest. How are things going with that? I think it is a great article to work on, although I imagine it would be very difficult. QuicoleJR (talk) 20:11, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Mainly so far, lots of reading and taking notes! I haven't really been able to put anything to writing yet, since I want to make sure that I can write a broad overview which covers all the broad topics. I want to (when possible) avoid sources which cover a specific region or country in isolation, and instead make sure to bring in lots of works which focus on it from a continental or international perspective. I have a very wide source list here, but I've been mainly looking at stuff in the first two sections so far. My plan is to start writing properly next week. Sorry about the John Silva Meehan delay[edit]

Sorry about this review still having not yet happened. I've been crunched at school and then under the weather the last few days in a way that's meant I'm only on Wikipedia glancingly instead of with the concentrated effort for writing out a review. But that explanation isn't an excuse, and this has been unfair to you, and I wanted to apologize for that. I'm still interested in completing the review, and my initial read is very optimistic about the article. Mainly I want to also read one or two of the article-length sources cited so I feel confident about my ability to do the source review. If that's alright, I'll plan to finish the review after I'm doing better—but up to you and what you'd prefer. Thanks. Hydrangeans (she/her | talk | edits) 18:49, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations! - Today's TFA, Felix M. Warburg House, was written by Vami_IV and Epicgenius, introduced: "This article is about another of the great houses that once lined Fifth Avenue in New York. Specifically, this is the mansion of Felix M. Warburg, a Jewish financier who ignored fears of anti-Semitic reprisal to his decided to build himself a big Gothic manor in the middle of New York City. Although the Warburgs no longer remain, their legacy does: the museum is now the home of the Jewish Museum (Manhattan) and the building largely survives as they left it. It's a beautiful building and I hope you will all enjoy it."! - in memory --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:26, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Testing automatic spelling and grammar suggestions[edit]

[Continued from Talk:James_White_(inventor)#Possible_spelling_and_grammar_errors]

Here are a few more. Some of the suggestions seem to be on target but others aren't so one can't trust them blindly. At least I figured out a way to ignore blockquotes, such as the ones in the article Isaac Franklin containing non-standard spelling.

German Mission House: no errors detected

Gusuku period:

  • Sentence: cereal cultivation did not occur in the Ryuykus prior to c. 800 CE, with plant foods largely limited to nuts.
    • Suggested change: replace "Ryuykus" with "Ryukyus"
    • Explanation: spelling error
  • Sentence: The lone unambiguous cultigens from the Shellmidden are bottle gourd seeds recovered from the Okinawan Ireibaru site.
    • Suggested change: replace "Shellmidden" with "Shell midden"
    • Explanation: spelling error
  • Sentence: Diplomatic relationships with the Ashikaga shogunate may have been opened by the lord of Shuri in 1403.The Hyōtō Ryūkyū-koku ki, written during the mid-13th century, depicts a group of Japanese travellers shipwrecked on Okinawa and finding themselves in the midst of fierce warfare.
    • Suggested change: add a space after "1403."
    • Explanation: punctuation error

Isaac Franklin

  • Sentence: Franklin and has younger brother William acquired a house several blocks outside of the Natchez city limits...
    • Suggested change: replace "has" with "his"
    • Explanation: grammatical error
  • Sentence: Unlike the "makeshift pens" used by itinerant slave traders in Natchez, the Franklin brothers' facility was a large facility able to confine large numbers of enslaved people at once.
    • Suggested change: remove the second instance of "facility"
    • Explanation: redundancy
  • Sentence: He hired agents in Virginia and Maryland to purchase slaves for his sales, although occasionally traveling to the region to supervise purchases.
    • Suggested change: replace "although" with "occasionally"
    • Explanation: grammatical error
  • Sentence: This soon became a cluster of buildings housing various slave trader's operations, referred to derisively as "Niggerville".
    • Suggested change: replace "trader's" with "traders'"
    • Explanation: possessive form error
  • Sentence: Routh failed to pay land taxes for a number of years, with debts compounded by large number of mortgages and court judgements against him.
    • Suggested change: replace "judgements" with "judgments"
    • Explanation: spelling error

Phlsph7 (talk) 09:34, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • And implemented! All of these except the Shellmidden -> Shell midden are valid and replacing occasionally were valid. Maybe capitalized words within links should be exempt due to the likelihood of it being a proper name? Generalissima (talk) (it/she) 15:43, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's a good idea. Unfortunately, I can only think of a rather complicated way of implementing that. I'll keep it in mind and see if that problem keeps coming up in other articles. Meanwhile, I modified the script to make the explanations a little more helpful. A few more tests:
    Bonn–Oberkassel dog
    • Sentence: Canine distemper is a serious viral disease with a estimated fatality rate of 75% in puppies, often due to starvation, dehydration, and secondary infections over the course of three waves.
      • Suggested change: replace "a estimated" with "an estimated"
      • Explanation: article usage error
    John Silva Meehan
    • Sentence: Returning without seeing combat, he begun work as a publisher...
      • Suggested change: replace "begun" with "began"
      • Explanation: "begun" is the past participle form, while "began" is the simple past tense form.
    • Sentence: ...and Meehan begun editing and publishing The Columbian Star...
      • Suggested change: replace "begun" with "began"
      • Explanation: "begun" is the past participle form, while "began" is the simple past tense form.
    • Sentence: the incoming administration begun a mass shift...
      • Suggested change: replace "begun" with "began"
      • Explanation: "begun" is the past participle and requires an auxiliary verb, while "began" is the simple past tense.
    • Sentence: "librarian of one side of the isle"
      • Suggested change: replace "isle" with "aisle"
      • Explanation: "isle" refers to an island, while "aisle" refers to a passage between rows of seats or shelves.
    • Sentence: in April 23, 1829...
      • Suggested change: replace "in" with "on"
      • Explanation: the correct preposition for dates is "on"
    • Sentence: at a significant lower rate...
      • Suggested change: replace "significant" with "significantly"
      • Explanation: "significantly" is the correct adverb form to modify "lower rate"
    • Sentence: ...and repeatedly and unsuccessfully attempt to reclaim the position...
      • Suggested change: replace "attempt" with "attempted"
      • Explanation: past tense consistency
    • Sentence: Meehans position became increasingly unstable.
      • Suggested change: add an apostrophe to "Meehans" to form "Meehan's"
      • Explanation: possessive form needed to indicate that the position belongs to Meehan.
    • Sentence: Stephenson officially accepted his appointment on May 23, 1861 and Meehan calmly left his duties at the end of the month.
      • Suggested change: add a comma after "1861"
      • Explanation: a comma is needed to separate the two independent clauses.
    Guandimiao
    • Sentence: ...in preparation for the nearby South–North Water Transfer Project Excavation and study at Guandimiao has significantly broadened...
      • Suggested change: add a period after "Project"
      • Explanation: the sentence is a run-on and needs to be split into two separate sentences.
    • Sentence: The 228 Anyang-period tombs found at the site suggests a population...
      • Suggested change: replace "suggests" with "suggest"
      • Explanation: subject-verb agreement
    • Sentence: Pottery exports to Yinxu itself was unlikely due to the large distances between the sites.
      • Suggested change: replace "was" with "were"
      • Explanation: subject-verb agreement
    • Sentence: Some wells, associated with residential usage due to similarities to other wells in North China, with deep, narrow shafts.
      • Suggested change: add "are" after "wells"
      • Explanation: the verb "are" is needed to complete the sentence structure.
    • Sentence: ...primary containing the remains of cattle...
      • Suggested change: replace "primary" with "primarily"
      • Explanation: "primarily" is the correct adverb form to describe the action.

@Generalissima Hope you are doing well. We have collaborated previously on Prince Philip's DYK nomination and Aza Arnold's GAR. Given your experience at FAC and your long editing career here at English Wikipedia, I thought I could reach out to you regarding the Source Review for my FA nomination of Catherine, Princess of Wales. As it's my first time at FAC and the article is already a GA, it would be great if you could conduct a source review for it. Your suggestions will be greatly appreciated. The Tireless Contributor Barnstar
Thank you for getting the article German Mission House to GA status! I enjoy reading new GA and FA articles when they get promoted, and recently saw your featured List of historic places in the Chatham Islands. I thought it was interesting that only one of the places had its own Wikipedia article, and that more attention should probably be given to it then. I'm glad today it got that attention, and that there are people like you to get these niche but interesting places promoted! A huge thanks, from North Carolina 😄 Johnson524 01:15, 6 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Well, that was interesting, Generalissima. I've never seen a linked article that was not the bolded DYK get so much attention from so many different editors. In the 24 hours that this was up, Joseph Tetley was worked on by nine logged in editors, plus a few IP editors. Before you started on the Kekerengu article, the Tetley article looked quite sad. Look at it now and it's in a completely different state. I've just had a go myself and found many faults with the Prow bio; that's surprising because that website is run by a group of libraries and they generally get things right. In fact, the article has grown in size enough that it meets DYK requirements under 5x expansion. I'll nominate it. Schwede66 05:57, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Mentorship?[edit]

Hi I think your work is absolutely fantastic, and I thought I'd ask for a long shot... I'm currently working on Draft:Timeline of the Canterbury earthquakes (it's far from finished) and was hoping that I could get a mentor to help get it to a featured list or something. It's a huge article, my largest by far, with currently 232 sources and I expect that it'll surpass 500. I understand that you might not be interested because the article is so big / you might not have enough time / it may not be a topic that interests you, so feel free to decline :) Thanks either way for reading this and keep up with the good work ―Panamitsu (talk) 00:46, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ooh, I commend you on your work here and thank you very much for your compliments! I admit, I'm no expert on lists myself, especially those in a format I'm not the most familiar with about a subject that's not in my wheelhouse. The FL list itself has a number of timelines you can pursue to get a sense of the formatting - really, it's all about getting the formatting down and making sure everything is well cited. People at FLC are generally very helpful, so I wouldn't worry too hard there. Generalissima (talk) (it/she) 01:26, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
