Montferrier-sur-Lez (French pronunciation: [mɔ̃fɛʁje syʁ lɛz] , literally Montferrier on Lez; Occitan: Montferrièr de Les) is a commune in the Hérault department in Occitania, France, west of the Lez. It is 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) north of Montpellier.[2] In 2022, it had a population of [number].[cite] Formerly in Languedoc.[3]
Etymology[edit]
In Latin Monsferrarius. Belmont-Joris gives three explanations for how the village might have been named: some claim it comes from Mons ferarum (mountain of wild beasts) owing to, in ancient times, the mountain being where bears and wolves would build dens in the rocks. Others claim Montagne ferrée (mountain of iron) because the basalt rocks of the mountain gave the hill the appearance of the metal. The final explanation Belmont-Joris offers is that the first man to be in possession (note: not quite the right wording, change later) the hill, speculated to be a lord or chief, was named Ferrier: thus, the Mont de Ferrier (Ferrier's mountain).[4]

Stands on a conical hill. Made of basalt. Once an active volcano. Cooled lava can still be found in the topsoil. 150 meters above sea level. Surrounded by "a wooded and green forest".[2]
