Early Life[edit]

Hufsky was born in Villach, Austria in Carinthia where he grew up together with his younger sister Susanna and also attended the HTL Villach. In 2006, he moved to Vienna in order to gain a wider audience for his political ambitions as well as to find more like-minded people who he found at Metalab, an open collaboration space for hackers, artists and founders.

In summer 2006, Hufsky co-founded the Pirate Party Austria as one of the first Pirate Parties outside of Sweden. He was able to win Rickard Falkvinge, the founder of the Swedish Pirate Party to support his cause and to visit Vienna in June 2007 where they both organized a protest against Data Retention.

Software and Game Author[edit]

In 2003, Hufsky made his debut as game developer with Super Mario War. Super Mario War uses elements of the classical Super Mario game series while enhancing this by multiplayer functionality.[1]

In 2006 he created the techdemo for PixelWar, a game featuring rough pixelated characteres. Later he abandoned PixelWar in favor of Puit, a jump'n'run and strategy mahsup, to be understand as an prototype. In the period of developing, the name changed from "Puit War" to "p.o.i.t" and vice versa.

A byproduct of Puit is PuitUniverse, an 2D game engine, released as open source software.

Startup Founder[edit]

In 2006, Hufsky co-founded the Blogging startup Soup.io that allows users to post and share text and multimedia content on their tumblelog page. Soup.io gained popularity for its "endless scrolling", an unusual feature he contributed, that automatically loads further content over JavaScript when the user scrolls down giving an illusion of endless content. At 2008's [[]] dispute with the co-founders, Hufsky left the company in the same year.

Death and controversy[edit]

In the afternoon of December 16, 2009, Florian Hufsky ended his life by jumping from the roof of the University of Applied Arts Vienna, where he studied. Shortly before his death, Hufsky set his Facebook status to "when in doubt, do it. jump.", a variation of his blog's title ("when in doubt, do it"), thereby leaving a suicide note in less than 140 characters. The exact time of him updating his Facebook status is unknown, leaving room for speculation that this was intended as a cry for help (that apparently no one answered). - Das würd ich wirklich rausnehmen - Grund erklär ich dir privat.
