Torpedo boats are often used to arrack bigger enemies because they are munch stronger and harder to stop. A form of torpedo is called a spar. A British engineer named Robert Whitehead invented the first self propelled torpedo. The armor and gun weight made the ship's more heavier and harder to maneuver. With these self propelled torpedos the smallest nations could attack and they could challenge the most powerful navies in the world. This type of weapon caused an increase in World War I. Most European navies used the motor torpedo boats to be successful in World War I. Also some navies used the lighting concept and had gasoline engines.
