George Sorras (born 11 April 1972) is an Australian former professional soccer player who played as a Defender.

Career

Sorras began his junior career at Sydney Olympic. He quickly showed his talent and potential, which caught the eye of Australian Institute of Sport head coach Ron Smith, who handed George a fulltime scholarship position in 1989. After 2 years of development at the AIS, George returned to Sydney Olympic As seasons passed George adapted to a more defensive role and is most well remembered for his time in the National Soccer League as a ball playing defender. In 1996 Sorras moved on from Sydney Olympic to Canberra Cosmos, where he played his last season of professional football, retiring from knee injuries at the seasons end.

International Career

Sorras made 27 international appearances for the Young Socceroos and enjoyed international tours of Asia, Europe and North America. George was instrumental in Australia's successful qualification series for the 1991 FIFA World Youth Championship against Israel at the Sydney Football Stadium in 1990. At the tournament the next year, Australia progressed all the way to the Semi-Final. In front of a 112,000 spectator crowd in the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon, Portugal, Australia were beat by eventual Champions Portugal 1-0 through a remarkable strike outside the box from Rui Costa. Sorras started and played all 90 minutes of the match alongside teammates Mark Bosnich, Kevin Muscat, Tony Popovic and Paul Okon.
