One of the last[edit]

This man is one of only two surviving men of E company. It is sad to see and know this as we continue to lose hundreds of Veterans who served in WW2. It is eternally sad to know that they generation of WW2 survivors will die in my life time. It is our jobs as newer generation to record their stories and keep them alive even when the men who have told them and lived them have passed on into history. Death of Ed Shames[edit]

Shames died 'peacefully at home,' according to an obituary posted by the Holloman-Brown Funeral Home & Crematory.

Born to Jewish parents, Shames forged his mother's signature to enlist in the Army in 1942 at just 19, and was one of the officers in charge of the famed Easy Company, part of the US Army's 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division.

Edward Shames was a member of Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. He was involved in some of WWII's most significant battles-

Edward Shames became the first member of the 101st to enter Dachau concentration camp after its liberation.

"When Germany surrendered, Ed and his men of Easy Company entered Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest where Ed managed to acquire a few bottles of cognac, a label indicating they were 'for the Fuhrer’s use only.' Later, he would use the cognac to toast his oldest son’s Bar Mitzvah," according to the obituary.

Band of Brothers[edit]

Band of Brothers (book) was written by Stephen E. Ambrose, the book was made into an HBO miniseries, created by Tom Hanks & Stephen Spielberg. Shames was played by actor Joseph May in the Band of Brothers (miniseries). Episodes first aired on HBO starting on September 9, 2001. Critically acclaimed, the series won the Emmy and Golden Globe awards for best miniseries.
