Rewrote the article. The section on vector extension was written in an attempt to preserve the original intention of the article, which spoke specifically of vectors and not numbers, while trying to define the idea more precisely. I added a short line on its use in comutatiol computing and cited a source to MathWorks that talks about concatenation with in the MatLab language as well as the math. Definition

How is concatenation of two vectors defined? If I concatenate a and b, do I stick a's tip into b's tail, and then measure the result from a's tail to b's tip, or what? JIP | Talk 19:46, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

That's vector addition. I suspect this operation is intended to be list concatenation, since vectors can be regarded as lists. In other words, if (v₁, …, v_k) and (v_k+1, …,v_ℓ) are vectors, then their concatenation ought to be the vector (v₁, …,v_ℓ), formed by writing the entries of the first vector followed by the entries of the second vector. I never studied advanced vector mathematics. The article about vectors tells me it's some kind of collection of factors (a₁, ..., a_n). Am I to understand this is a generalisation of an n-dimension geometrical vector? If so, then if a is an n-dimensional vector, and b is an m-dimesional vector, wouldn't a|b be an (n+m)-dimensional vector? JIP | Talk 20:42, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

Derived from concatenation in computer science

I was looking for an article on string concatenation and ended up here. Clearly the notion discussed here was derived from that of string concatenation, but the article there only discusses its use in programming languages, not its definition or use in formal language theory.
