Moved beyond stubby beginning, adding in sources which I believe establish notability. I'm taking the tag off. AlonsornunezComments 04:53, 26 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I just removed the tags for "Orphan" (added links) and "Notability" (as the article has reliable, secondary sources. AlonsornunezComments 15:16, 29 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No to the Merger[edit]

It's clear that this article has enough sources and references to stand on its own. Also, the Boycott is one that involves Venus and Serena, but also the WTA Tour (their reaction, the 'roadmap', etc.) and thus should be its own thing. Thanks for the move though. I was trying to think of something better. AlonsornunezComments 11:35, 30 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

So, we also should have an article entitled "WTA Reaction to the Boycott of BNP Paribas Open by Venus and Serena Williams"? The question is not whether there are enough sources for a stand-alone article. Rather, the question is whether it makes sense to have a stand alone article for an issue that more appropriately and logically belongs in the player biographies themselves. Just because you can create an article doesn't mean you should. Tennis expert (talk) 18:00, 30 March 2009 (UTC) By the way, per Wikipedia policy, this discussion should be happening on the discussion pages of the biographies, not here. I'm here from WP:3O -- this is an obvious merge or even outright delete per WP:NOTNEWS. DreamGuy (talk) 14:29, 10 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

WTF?[edit]

So they boycott that thing because some sicko shouted some racist insult to them? That would be completely stupid. There must be something I didn't understand, which means the article is not very clear. OK they refused to discuss it but it should be possible to clarify what has been written about it without making them look like lunatic retards. Anyway, IMHO, that should be in the article about the tournament, and there should be a link to that section in the articles about the sisters.91.122.14.198 (talk) 15:51, 2 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The ending section needs some editing[edit]

"Contrarily to her comments, the usage of the "nigger" word has not been confirmed by any independent source present at the tournament. It is possible that Serena Williams was just upset by the fact she got booed by the crowd. Established tennis commentators like Jon Wertheim have pointed repeatedly at her exaggerated need for attention and approval."

First of all, I think the first sentence is relevant to the article. However, I feel like the "it is possible..." sentence does not contribute anything and that assumptions like that should be made by the reader him/herself. After all, the first sentence already hints at the fact that Serena could have heard wrong. And there are also many numerous reasons why Serena could have claimed that she heard the word "nigger"--maybe she was covering up for the fact that her father really did fix the match and instead tried to put the focus on the crowd? But that would also be inappropriate to talk about too right?

Just my two cents......

Move proposal[edit]

This redirect page is mainly kept for its history after the merge into Williams sisters. But I think we should move it to Boycott of Indian Wells Masters by Venus and Serena Williams , because BNP Paribas was not the sponsor of this event at the time of this incident, so it gets unfairly mentioned in connection with a negative event with which it has nothing to do. Project tennis also has a guideline to avoid sponsor names in page titles as much as possible. Can we just move, or does this need to go through some procedure here or there? I'll just be bold and go ahead with the move. MakeSense64 (talk) 07:50, 15 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
