Greyfriars Church, originally known as the Mt Eden Presbyterian Church, is an early 20th century Presbyterian Church located in Mount Eden, Auckland, New Zealand listed as a Category II building by Heritage New Zealand.[1]

History[edit]

The Mt Eden Presbyterian Church was built in 1916 by Archibald Grandison and designed by architect Thomas Mullions. In 1921 a Sunday school was operating out of the basement.[1] The name was changed to Greyfriars Church in 1950. A memorial hall was established in 1952 congregation members who died in service during the two World Wars.[2] In 1958 the building underwent renovation.[1]

Since 2011 the building has been closed due to the building being deemed unsafe in event of an earthquake following regulations established after the 2011 Christchurch earthquake. Seismic strengthening options have been too expensive for the congregation.[3]

In 2014 the congregation merged with the Epsom Presbyterian Church to become the Greyfriars Eden Epsom Presbyterian Church.[4]
