Matt Cooper (born 1970) is an English experimental jazz musician and record producer, releasing tracks under the alias Outside.[1]

Formerly the keyboardist and Music Director for Incognito, Outside was particularly prolific in the 1990s, and has been described by Giles Peterson as “An incredible pianist, drummer, writer, producer and artist, he has been leading the way with British Jazz Funk for the last 30 years”.[2] [3] [4][5]

Career[edit]

In 1993, Cooper signed with experimental label Dorado Records as Outside. He released his debut album ‘Almost In’ later that year. [6] [7] Subsequent releases on the label were featured extensively on compilations at the time.

He has also worked as a touring and recording musical director and instrumentalist for notable artists including David Sylvian [8], Jocelyn Brown[9], Whitney Houston, Paul Weller[10], Anita Kelsey[11],  and Chaka Khan12].

As of 2021, Cooper continues to be signed to Dorado and is currently working alongside Gilles Peterson and Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick on their STR4TA project.[13]
