Draft:El on a bender

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

ʔEl on a Bender is a text in which the elder god El gets very drunk and the goddess ʕAṯtaru-we-ʕAnatu goes on a hunt for a cure. It is known as CoS 1.97 and RS 24.258, CAT or KTU 1.114. It's known for the earliest reference to the hair of the dog and to the marzeah, a concept of academic interest that might mean symposium here.[1][2]

Plot[edit]

El slaughters game to serve a feast. The gods arrive and indulge in food and "good/new wine to drunkenness."

Yarikh (Yariḫu) acts like a dog.[3] Those who don't know he's the moon god kick him under the table. ʕṯtrt-we-ʕnt, a familiar yet unique binomial divine name, gives him meat, and the butler scolds her for giving good food to an animal. El retires from the dinner to his Marzeah, which Pardee translates as drinking club.

Ṯukamuna-wa-Šunama are named in the following section, where they carry the drunk El home.[3] Ḥby or "he who has two horns and a tail" then seems to trip El, who ends up on the floor as if dead. The goddess goes on a hunt to retrieve a cure.[4]

The last lines are a medicinal recipe.
