Ana Book Store

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ana Book Store is a second-hand bookstore in stall 1, floor 5 of Far East Plaza, 14 Scots road, Singapore owned by a 70 year old bengali man named Mohd Noorul Islam. It is the last second hand bookstore in Orchard road.[1] [2][3][4]The name, Ana came from the owner’s mother, Sultana.[5]

History[edit]

The Modern Book Store was founded in 1939 by M. Mohd Aksir who came from then East Pakistan now known as Bangladesh in the year 1938. He set up the store in Singapore’s Bras Basah road. In 1978, M. Mohd Aksir and his father died leaving Aksir’s son, Mohd Noorul Islam to run the store, who then changed the name to the Ana Book Store. The store was later moved to Far East Plaza in 1993 when the building housing it was destroyed. During those days customers dubbed Noorul Islam as the “Mr Bean of Singapore” something that local newspapers caught on garnering the store more publicity.[6][7]
