Those that download the demo will get a sampling of two game modes: Battle for the Cup and Hockey Ultimate Team. Battle for the Cup allows fans (single or local multiplayer) to play the 3rd period of Game Seven in the Stanley Cup Finals between the Philadelphia Flyers at Chicago Blackhawks. The score will be different each game as it will be simmed up to that point in time. You will be able to view the box score of the first two periods prior to entering gameplay.

In the Hockey Ultimate Team portion of the demo, each user will receive a Starter Pack of cards. You will be able to edit your lineup and try to maximize chemistry. For consumables, you will start with a couple of Training Cards and will earn more Training Cards that can be applied to your team after each game you play in the offline tournament (only tournament available in the demo). Just like in the Battle for the Cup mode, each game will be in the 3rd period (up to three games).

Not every demo HUT team will be the same. There is a pool of 75 players, 4 jerseys and 4 logos that the user can get in their starter pack. Each user will receive 24 players, 2 jerseys (one home and one away) and 1 logo in their starter pack. Once the user quits out of HUT and re-enters, their team will be reset with a new group of cards.

You will earn EA Pucks after every game you play in HUT whether they win or lose. The point of allowing EA Puck earning in the demo is to show you approximately how many pucks you will receive when you complete HUT games.

Just for entering Hockey Ultimate Team in the demo, you will receive a small reward pack when you play HUT in the full title. If the user wins the HUT demo tournament the reward pack that they would have received for playing the demo will turn into a larger reward pack that contains a rare card. Users will also receive an additional reward pack in the full title if they invite their friends to play the demo via XBOX LIVE or PSN. Note, however, that your demo HUT team will not transfer to the full game.

Classic controls will be available in the demo. You can choose between Default, Classic, NHL 94 Controls and Custom control schemes. You can do this in the pause menu once you enter gameplay. All camera options available in the full title will also be available in the demo (Ice, Classic, Overhead, Broadcast and Action).

The demo is just under 1.2 GB and Bottom of the Well by Airbourne and Full of Regret by Danko Jones are the 2 tracks in the sampling. Also, an interactive tutorial will be available on the main menu of the demo and Hockey Ultimate Team tutorial video is also played before you create your HUT team.

NHL 11 will be the 20th ice hockey video game in the NHL series, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the series.[2] The game was developed by EA Canada and will be published by EA Sports. The game will be released on September 7, 2010.[1]

New expected clubs in the game are AIK Ishockey in Elitserien, which managed to qualify for the 2010–11 Elitserien season, replacing Rögle BK, who were relegated. Also included for the first time will be the sixty teams from the Canadian Hockey League (CHL).[1] It is confirmed that CHL teams will also be a part of the Be A Pro and Be A GM modes, rather than simply being playable in "Play Now" games, like some of the European leagues.[3]

The demo was released on August 17, 2010 in North America and August 18, 2010 in Europe, on both the Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Store[4]

Game covers

On June 21, 2010, Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks was announced as the cover athlete for NHL 11 in North America, marking the first time players were selected from the same team in consecutive years. (Chicago teammate Patrick Kane was the cover athlete for NHL 10 in North America.)[2]

Toews won a gold medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics and the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP. He captained the Blackhawks to their first Stanley Cup win since 1961, all in 2010.[2]

On June 23, 2010, identical twins Daniel Sedin and Henrik Sedin of the Vancouver Canucks were announced as the cover athletes for the Swedish cover of NHL 11.[5] Mark Streit will, for the third year in a row, be on the Swiss cover of NHL 11.[6]

Gameplay

NHL 11 will introduce broken sticks to the NHL series.

On May 3, 2010, a FAQ was released on the EA Sports website regarding questions users will (or may) ask regarding the gameplay of the game before the game is released.[7]

The game, like its predecessor NHL 10, will include "over 200 gameplay refinements",[8] including:

  • Broken sticks and the ability to retain control of a stick-less player. The player will be able to kick or grab the puck, and teammates may offer their own stick as a replacement. Alternatively, the player may return to the bench for another stick.[9]
  • A new physics-based engine, unlike the previous engine, which was animation-based. This ensures that each bodycheck is unique, adding to the realism of the game.[9]
  • A revamped faceoff system, which introduces the ability to switch between standard or reversed grips, and to push or block the faceoff opponent. Timing will remain an important part of the faceoff process.[10]
  • Changes to the passing system in which passes are now triggered at the release of the trigger button, instead of the initial pull. The longer the button is held, the stronger the pass will be.[10]
  • An all new Hit Stick feature has been added. This allows players to control the location of their hit on the opposing player. Whether a player gets hit high or low, each hit will have a different outcome, including penalties and injuries.[11]
  • In the new Ultimate Team mode, the players receives a pack of cards and uses them as their team and to build up their own team and make it the best they can.[12]
  • A new control button, the Hustle Button, is similar to the speed burst button of previous NHL games, but now, in NHL 11, players can use the hustle button if they're racing for the puck, to stop the icing or to get the breakaway.[13]
  • Pre-Season games for the all the season based modes.
  • The adding of Unrestricted Free Agents and Restricted Free Agents.[14]

Other additions include user-controlled goal celebrations, disallowed goals, playoff beards[15] and the ability to jump over a prone player.[8]

Demo
