Luka Rocco Magnotta (born Eric Clinton Kirk Newman; July 24, 1982) is a Canadian gay pornographic actor[3][9][10][11][12][13] accused of murdering and dismembering Lin Jun, a 33-year-old Chinese international student,[12][14][15][16] then mailing his severed limbs to offices of Canadian political parties.[17][18] After a video allegedly depicting the murder was posted online,[19][20] Magnotta fled the country, becoming the subject of an Interpol Red Notice[17][21] and prompting an international manhunt. He was apprehended on June 4 in an Internet cafe in Berlin while reading news stories about himself.[17][22] He was previously sought by animal rights groups for allegedly posting videos of himself torturing kittens.[23][24][25][20]

History

Magnotta, then named Eric Clinton Newman, was born in Scarborough, Ontario. He was raised in Lindsay, Ontario by his grandparents and attended I. E. Weldon Secondary School.[26] He changed his name to Luka Rocco Magnotta on August 12, 2006.[27]

In 2003, Magnotta began to appear in gay pornographic videos, occasionally working as a stripper and a male escort.[6] He has identified himself at different times as being bisexual or as a heterosexual who was strictly "gay-for-pay", with his only confirmed romantic relationships being with women.[14][6] Despite being described, both by himself and by the media, as a porn star, his career in porn appears to have been relatively brief.[28] He also appears to have embellished his porn credentials by claiming credit for numerous other videos in which he was not featured.[28]

He also appeared as a pin-up model in a 2005 issue of Toronto's fab magazine, using the pseudonym "Jimmy".[6] In 2007, he was an unsuccessful competitor in OUTtv's reality series COVERguy;[6] while he made only a single appearance on the show and was not selected by the judges to continue in the competition, in his own later writings he often claimed to have been a finalist who left the show due to disagreements with the producers.[28]

In 2005, Magnotta was convicted on three counts of fraud against Sears Canada, The Brick, and 2001 Audio Video after impersonating a woman to purchase $16,900 of goods on a stolen credit card,[28] and received a nine-month conditional sentence with 12 months of probation.[29] In 2007, Magnotta declared bankruptcy, which was fully discharged in December 2007.[30]

A few news stories emerged in 2007 claiming that he was in a relationship with Karla Homolka, a high-profile Canadian murderer,[31] although Magnotta denied in an interview with the Toronto Sun that he had ever even met her.[32][33] During the murder investigation, Montreal police initially announced that the pair had dated,[34] but subsequently retracted the statement and acknowledged that they had no new evidence to corroborate the claim.[35]

Toronto Sun reporter Joe Warmington, who interviewed Magnotta about the Homolka rumours in 2007, described him as "creepy in more of a seedy side of life way",[36] and an unidentified family member stated "he hurt us when he was younger and we haven't been in contact with him in a while."[37]

Magnotta, or someone connected to him, appears to have maintained an extensive network of profiles on various internet social media and discussion forums, which were used over a period of several years to plant false or unverified news stories depicting him as a celebrity with a large and loyal fan following.[38] These accounts have been credited by the National Post as a possible source of the Homolka claims,[38] as well as false claims that Magnotta spent some time living in Los Angeles as a roommate of Timothy Boham, an adult film actor who was himself convicted of murder in 2009.[38] In addition, these profiles were also responsible for the embellished claims about Magnotta's prominence as a model and porn actor, and also posted numerous other "celebrity gossip" items and opinion pieces on political and social topics.[38] By March 2012, more than two months before Lin's murder, these online personas were already associating Magnotta's name with both necrophilia and serial killing.[38] Magnotta has also been alleged to have potential links to white supremacy groups; two users on Stormfront who posted in a similar writing style purportedly expressed Magnotta's views against Chinese and Jewish people, as well as rants about the "slander" and "bullying" he faced from animal rights activists.[25][39]

In the past, Magnotta had responded to criticisms of him on his personal website, saying that "many hoax websites are created using my image and name, posing as me to seem more believable in respect to the type of audience these websites have."[40] An unidentified family member told the Toronto Sun that Magnotta has a personal history of making up rumours and stories about himself for attention: "He will create a conflict, then he will take himself out and he will deny the content of the story, which he in fact started."[41]

According to police, Magnotta set up at least 70 Facebook pages under different names,[16] and they can be used as evidence against him in court.[16] A Facebook page titled "Find Serial Killer Luka Magnotta" was created on May 24, presumably by Magnotta himself.[42] Police are investigating three additional videos he may have filmed in Europe while on the run.[43][44][45]

Murder of Lin Jun

Makeshift memorial for Jun Lin in the Norman Bethune Square in Montreal.

Lin Jun (Chinese: 林俊 Lín Jùn) (born 30 December 1978 in Wuhan[46]) also known as Justin Lin,[47] originally from Wuhan,[14][48][15] was an international student and an undergraduate in the engineering and computer science faculty at Concordia University.[11] Lin had been studying in Montreal since July 2011.[14][15] Lin moved into a Griffintown-area apartment with a roommate on May 1.[15] He was last seen on May 24, 2012,[14][15][49] and reported missing by a friend on May 29.[15][49]

On May 25, 2012[49] an 11-minute video (known as "1 Lunatic 1 Ice Pick"),[19][50][51][52][53] was posted on Internet gore websites depicting a naked male tied to a bed frame[32] being repeatedly stabbed with an ice pick and a kitchen knife, then dismembered[50], followed by acts of necrophilia.[19][54] Canadian authorities were reportedly able to obtain a "more extensive" version of the video, and subsequently provided conflicting statements as to whether acts of cannibalism had been performed.[54][45][55] During the video, the 1987 New Order song True Faith plays in the background.[14][17] On May 26, an attorney living in the US State of Montana attempted to report the video and its contents to Toronto Police, his Sheriff's department, and the FBI, but it was initially dismissed by officials who said the video was "almost certainly fake — that special effects were very good" and refused to allow a link to the video to be sent to them.[56][51][57] Police later confirmed the video as authentic[14][4] and "have all the reasons to believe" that the victim, an Asian male,[58] is the same one whose body parts were sent to Ottawa.[14][59]

On May 29, 2012, a package containing a left foot[60][45] was delivered to the national headquarters of the Conservative Party of Canada, which made headlines around the world. The package, which was opened by Jenni Byrne, director of political operations for the party, was stained with blood and had a foul smell. At 9 PM the same day, a package containing a left hand[60][45] was discovered by the Ottawa Police in a Canada Post processing facility, addressed to the Liberal Party, and a decomposing torso was found in a locked brown suitcase[61][59] by janitor Mike Nadeau,[62][61] left in a garbage pile in the alley behind an apartment building in the Snowdon area of Montreal.[63][58] After an 18-hour search of the scene,[58] human parts,[58] different papers identifying the suspect,[58][54] as well as "sharp and blunt objects"[58][54] were found in the back alley. Footage from surveillance cameras inside the building showed a suspect bringing numerous garbage bags outside and the images matched the same suspect captured on video at the post office in Côte-des-Neiges.[58][54] At 11:33 PM, police searched apartment 208,[58][59][64] which alleged suspect[58] Luka Rocco Magnotta[64][59] was renting. He moved in four months prior[32] and his rent was paid up to June 1.[61] Blood was found on different items including the mattress and the refrigerator.[58][64][59] The phrase "If you don't like the reflection. Don't look in the mirror. I don't care." was written in red ink on the inside of a closet.[54][61] According to neighbour Derek Mackinnon, Magnotta brought home a male, which was an "unusual sight" then left the next morning wearing a red wig.[61]

On May 30, 2012, it was confirmed that the body parts belonged to the same individual, later identified as Lin Jun.[15][11][14] The suspect in the case was quickly identified as Magnotta, who had by then fled. A warrant was issued by the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) for his arrest, later upgraded to a Canada-wide warrant by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP),[65] launching a national manhunt.

On May 31, 2012, Interpol issued a Red Notice for Magnotta at the request of Canadian authorities, and his name and photo were displayed prominently for several days at the top of the homepage of the Interpol website. The Red Notice requested that Magnotta be provisionally arrested pending extradition back to Canada by any Interpol member state.[21] It was later confirmed that he left Canada on May 26[66] and went to Paris, France; from there he later travelled by coach to Berlin, Germany where he was arrested.[3][67][68]

A note was found with the package sent to the Conservative Party headquarters, stating that other body parts were sent by mail and that he would kill again.[69][70][43] Notes were also included in the other three recovered packages, but police declined to reveal what the notes said, citing "concerns about possible copycats" as the reason.[45][42]

On June 5, 2012, a package containing a right foot was delivered to St. George's School and another package containing a right hand to False Creek Elementary School in Vancouver.[71][72][73][74][75][75] It is not known why the two particular schools were targeted.[42] On June 6, 2012, Montreal police took over the investigation after it was confirmed that both packages were sent from Montreal,[42][76][77][78] and the right hand and the right foot were from the same body[42][77][76] that were missing in the Montreal case. They will be transported to Montreal for DNA testing.[78] On June 6, it was revealed by Montreal police that Magnotta had previously stayed in Vancouver for an unspecified period of time and a condo was rented under one of his aliases.[13][42]

Search and arrest

A Canada-wide arrest warrant for Magnotta was issued, accusing him of the following crimes:[79][12][80]

  1. First degree murder;
  2. Committing an indignity to a dead body;
  3. Mailing "obscene, indecent, immoral or scurrilous" material; and
  4. Criminally harassing Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and several (unnamed) members of Parliament.

On May 31, 2012, Interpol issued a Red Notice for Magnotta at the request of Canadian authorities, and for several days before and after his arrest his name and photo were displayed prominently at the top of the homepage of the Interpol website. The Red Notice requested that Magnotta be provisionally arrested pending extradition back to Canada by any Interpol member state.[81] It was later confirmed that he left Canada and went to Paris, France.[82] He was seen boarding a bus destined for Berlin, Germany.[3]

Magnotta was apprehended by Berlin Police at an Internet cafe in the Neukölln district on June 4, 2012, while reading news stories about himself.[3][83][84][17][85][86] He tried giving fake names before admiting who he was.[87] His identity was confirmed through fingerprint evidence.[88][49] Magnotta appeared in a Berlin court on June 5, 2012 and has not yet contested his extradition to Canada.[87][89] Magnotta is said to be "fearing for his safety" from the other inmates due to his portrayal in the media.[90]

On June 4, 2012, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper was pleased that the suspect has been arrested, and wanted to congratulate the police forces on their good work in apprehending the suspect.[88] Interim Liberal Party leader Bob Rae said that Canadians should mourn Lin Jun rather than "in any way, shape or form" celebrate the notoriety of Mr. Magnotta.[91] Friends of Lin Jun expressed relief at the suspect's capture.[47]

International reaction

Reactions in China have been highly critical, with some there believing the murder to be racially motivated.[92] Some people there have questioned public safety in Canada, as the Lin Jun killing is the second high-profile murder of a Chinese student there in slightly over a year.[92] Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird called Chinese ambassador Zhang Junsai to convey his deep condolences.[12][93]

On June 6, Lin Jun's family arrived at Trudeau Airport in Montreal. His mother was barely able to walk and is only known to have said "We come to take you home."[94][95][60][96]

On June 7, 2012 the mainland China consulate in Montréal announced the Chinese Students and Scholars Association of Concordia University is raising money to defray expenses incurred by Lin's family while in Canada.[97][98]

Investigation regarding other crimes

According to the Montreal Gazette, Magnotta is alleged to have been the person behind a series of videos of animal cruelty involving cats which were posted to YouTube[99] beginning in 2010, including one which showed a man deliberately suffocating kittens with a vacuum cleaner and one in which a man fed a live kitten to a python.[100] After identifying Magnotta as the likely suspect, animal rights activists offered a $5000 reward for "bringing him to justice".[100] Scotland Yard investigated claims that the python video had been shot while Magnotta was living in London in 2011, but denied that the incident had occurred within its jurisdiction, stating that the video had been "posted from somewhere in North America."[101]

Police in Gatineau are investigating possible ties between Magnotta and the 2011 murder of Valerie Leblanc in their city due to the "distinct nature" of both crimes.[102][103] On June 8, Los Angeles police announced they were in contact with Montreal police to determine if Magnotta was involved in the unsolved murder and decapitation of Hervey Medellin.[104][105][106] LAPD later announced that they did not believe he was involved in the crime.[107] The animal rights group Last Chance for Animals claimed responsibility for posting YouTube videos linking him to the unsolved "Hollywood Sign Murder" in an attempt to lure Magnotta into contacting them.[108][109][110]
